The Variegated Fairy-wrens are Back
Nice to see the Variegated Fairy-wrens around on the Sandy Creek Walk today.
I saw them flitting away through the tangle and decided to see if call-back was effective. Within seconds they were very close to me and I got some great closeup shots of them. It looks like the males have a little way to go before they are fully coloured so I will keep my eye out for them
And it was nice to get the females as well. They have a distinctive "goth" look about their eyes, although I think I would still be hard pressed to tell the difference between female Variegated and Superb Fairy-wrens.
The other interesting observation this morning was to see Bell Miners feeding on the ground. They are normally arboreal but I think they come down early in the morning to get water from the grass leaves. At least that is what they appeared to be doing.
A number of Brown Gerygones and a couple of Eastern Spinebills also put in an appearance, making it quite an interesting morning in the long run.
