A Raptor Morning
Carmel asked me to help with the shopping today so I was late getting out on the walks. It is probably just as well because I saw a young Peregrine Falcon circling above the trees between the Swing Bridge and the factory. I though initially that I had photographed a Brown Goshawk but had some misgivings about its size.
At the same time I saw this large bird fly overhead and land in a tree on the opposite side of Dora Creek. It was an Osprey and for a moment I had the challenge of which raptor to photograph. Fortunately I managed to get both. Ospreys are appearing more frequently lately so I must see if they are nesting in the pylon over the creek from Beauty Point Road.
There were plenty of Silvereyes around this morning. They were not interested in either the Privet of the Tobacco Bush berries today. The flock was fairly active and moved on quickly. There were a few Brown Gerygones around but they were very high in the shrubs and not easy to photograph.
The Crested Pigeons are coming down out of the trees and feeding on the ground at the moment. There are always some of them around but they are not always easy to approach.
The grey fantails on the Beauty Point Road walk seemed overactive and I suspect they either have a nest or are building a nest nearby. I did not see one but will keep a look out on the area in the future.
The Bar-shouldered doves were plentiful near the vet's corner. Fran Newman may have been feeding them - although there were none in her yard this morning.
