Australasian Grebes

There is nearly always some Australasian (Little) Grebes on the sewerage ponds near the factory. But they usually spend their time on the far side of the ponds and being small birds they are very difficult to photograph. Today they were on the near side of the pond. I still had to contend with the Cyclone netting, but that was not too difficult.

Australasian Grebes are our smallest duck. They spend a lot of time diving for food, so they are constantly disappearing and reappearing. They stay under the water for quite a long time and it is difficult to predict where they will pop up. They often carry their young on their backs. I have never seen them fly.
