Butcherbirds

A discussion arose on the Cbong Facebook site about butcherbirds today so I collected up this information to help people to understand what they see. There are two species of Butcherbirds in the Cooranbong area; Pied Butcherbirds and Grey Butcherbirds. While they are similar, the adults are relatively easy to identify.
Grey Butcherbird
Grey Butcherbird
The Grey Butcherbird has a light grey front, a Black head and a darker grey back. There is some white in its wings. It has a narrow white collar that extends partly around its neck.
Pied Butcherbird
The Pied Butcherbird has a white front with a black throat bib, A black head and back. Typically there is more white in its wings than a Grey butcherbird.

Both birds are good singers
